Overview

The Dermatology Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is seeking a Mohs Technician at any level (I, II, or III) to support Mohs micrographic surgery within our laboratory.  Whether you are beginning your laboratory career or bringing advanced histotechnology experience, we welcome candidates across all levels.   The basic responsibilities and minimum qualifications for each level are outlined in the overview section below. 

 

This role supports precise tissue preparation and frozen section analysis to ensure accurate surgical margin assessment and high-quality patient care. 

 

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week day shift position, working Monday through Friday; no weekends or holidays required.

 

Mohs Technician I – Entry Level

Pay Range: $21.72 - $33.67/hr

Ideal for candidates beginning their laboratory career.

What You’ll Do:

  • Receive, label, and prepare tissue specimens
  • Assist with embedding, sectioning, staining, and coverslipping
  • Maintain documentation and specimen tracking
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized lab environment
  • Follow infection prevention and laboratory protocols

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Laboratory or healthcare experience (preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Dependability and willingness to learn

Mohs Technician II – Intermediate Level

Pay Range: $24.58 - $38.10/hr

For technicians with hands-on cryostat and frozen section experience.

What You’ll Do:

  • Orient and embed tissue for frozen sectioning
  • Perform cryostat sectioning and routine staining independently
  • Conduct quality control checks and maintain documentation
  • Assist with training and mentoring entry-level staff
  • Ensure compliance with safety and laboratory policies

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree or Medical Technology + 1 year of experience
    OR an Associate’s degree in Science or Medical Technology + 3 years of experience
    OR 4–5 years relevant laboratory experience
  • Proficiency in cryostat operation and frozen tissue processing
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Certification (ASCP, ASMH, or equivalent) preferred

Mohs Technician III – Advanced/Senior Level

Pay Range: $26.47 - $41.03/hr

For experienced technicians with advanced technical and leadership skills.

What You’ll Do:

  • Perform advanced tissue embedding, sectioning, and troubleshooting
  • Ensure precise tissue orientation for surgical margin assessment
  • Oversee lab workflow, quality control, and equipment calibration
  • Analyze results and ensure accurate reporting
  • Train and mentor Mohs I and II technicians
  • Maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree or Medical Technology + a minimum of 3 years of relevant laboratory experience
    OR an Associate’s degree + a minimum of 5 years of experience
    OR 9 years of relevant laboratory experience
  • Required certification (ASCP, ASMH, advanced training course, or equivalent)
  • Advanced cryostat and staining proficiency
  • Leadership, mentoring, and quality assurance experience

Responsibilities

  1. Receives, labels, and prepares tissue and fluid specimens for processing.
  2. Assists in embedding, cutting, and staining tissue sections under supervision.
  3. Helps with staining and coverslipping slides for microscopic review.
  4. Records results and assists with specimen documentation.
  5. Cleans and stores laboratory equipment and supplies.
  6. Maintains a safe, organized, and well-stocked work area.
  7. Adheres to infection prevention, safety, and hospital laboratory protocols.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous laboratory or healthcare experience preferred.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety and specimen handling.
  • Ability to follow step-by-step instructions with accuracy.
  • Attention to detail in labeling and recording.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills.
  • Dependability and willingness to learn new techniques.
