Overview

The Orthopaedic Technician Trainee participates in on-the-job training and learns to perform a variety of functions to support patient care, with supervision, in the ambulatory clinic, operating room, inpatient, and emergency room. Trainees learn to collaborate with specialty teams to provide outstanding patient service in an innovative and fast-paced Orthopaedic Practice. The Orthopaedic Technician Trainee will be expected to be proficient performing the competencies listed below and pass the Registered Orthopaedic Technician exam through the American Society of Orthopaedic Professionals within twelve months of hire. Upon successful completion of the training and certification, the employee will transition to a permanent Orthopaedic Technician role.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs greetings, check in patients, and notifies appropriate provider. Prepares patient, room and equipment for procedures and exams. Take and record vital signs. Informs provider of patient vital signs and patient chief complaint.
  2. Recognize and treat emergency patients as a priority, assists with patient examinations and treatments, uses aseptic technique including sterilization, disinfection and disposal of contaminated material.
  3. Handle patient situations over the phone, schedules appointments and procedures with medical professionals. Understands limitations in dealing with patients over the phone, and involves nursing staff and providers.
  4. Instructs patients in preparation for specific procedures.
  5. Handling routine laboratory specimen, this would entail labeling, verification of requisition and packaging of specimens for transport drawn by providers.
  6. Educates patients on cast and splint care, durable medical equipment, wound care and pre-surgical procedures.
  7. Provides assistance to the physician during minor procedures, assists provider in cleansing wounds and assists in application of dressings. Removes plaster casts, braces, and/or splints.
  8. Participates in and/or facilitates site-wide committees, meetings, in-services, and activities.
  9. Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards learning and teamwork. Demonstrates a strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  10. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • One (1) year of previous health care related experience preferred.
  • Medical Terminology class must be taken in first year.

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Certification in BLS required within 30 days of hire.
