Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Trainee is a temporary role for those actively enrolled in the Dartmouth Health Career Institute (DHCI) EMT training program. Learns to perform limited clinical and operational tasks of an EMT while preparing for the NREMT cognitive (written) exam. Upon successful completion of the training program and obtaining licensure, EMT trainees will transition to Dartmouth Health positions requiring an EMT license. EMT trainees are responsible for learning and practicing clinical and operational duties, such as: safely transporting patients to designated locations as well as transporting the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART) medical team during inter-facility transfers; emergent scene calls and intercepts with other Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies; and providing basic patient care and limited operational support for patients in the Emergency Department (ED) during varying states of health and illness. EMT trainees must be able to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities while demonstrating excellent and clear communication skills. Duties are performed in accordance with hospital, Emergency Department and DHART policies and procedures under the direction and supervision of the nurse, paramedic or unit operations manager/leader.

Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates positive and empathetic interpersonal skills.
  2. Learns to assist with patient care activities under the supervision of the Registered Nurse or paramedic, including, but not be limited to, performing activities of daily living (ADL's), obtaining clinical data, including vital signs, EKGs, utilizing universal precautions, collecting specimens, performing point of care testing and recording results in medical record.
  3. Learns to apply splints and immobilizers, and to remove IVs.
  4. Learns to assist in applying monitoring and/or caring of patients who require close observation (suicidal/elopement risks, patients in restraints and/or seclusion).
  5. Learns to perform clerical functions including answering phones, faxing, managing critical communication and able to prioritize and multi task during periods of high stress.
  6. Learns to stock supplies, rooms and patient care areas with detailed attention focused on emergency carts and equipment to maintain a state of readiness for any patient event.
  7. Learns basic de-escalation skills to manage highly volatile crisis events.
  8. Learns to manages patient health information and electronic medical records.
  9. Learns to complete a safety evaluation based on weather and road conditions prior to accepting a transport request.
  10. Learns to perform safety inspection on all ground ambulances at the beginning and end of shift.
  11. Learns to maintain readiness of ground ambulances to respond to transport requests.
  12. Learns to safely transfers patients from home or medical facility to designated location.
  13. Learns to document patient information and interventions on EMS electronic patient care record (EPCR) within mandated timeframes.
  14. Learns to assist the DHART Medical Crew with restocking, medical bags and equipment.
  15. Learns to identify vehicle mechanical issues, schedule preventative maintenance/repairs, and perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on ground ambulances.
  16. Learns to utilize road mapping, GPS hardware and software for transports.
  17. Learns to maintain communication with the DHART for the duration of each transport.
  18. Learns to serve as a licensed provider and safety officer on ground Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) transports.
  19. Performs other duties as required or assigned

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required in accordance with D-H’s Driver Disqualifications Guidelines.
  • Must get Basic Life Support (current) within 30 days
  • AVADE within 1 year of hire
  • Management of Aggressive Behaviors (MOAB) required within 6 months of hire.
  • Completes Driver Safety Practices modules as required by DH Insurance provider.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as a member of a team.
  • Computer skills strongly preferred.
  • Must be willing to complete all class activities and assignments as scheduled which may include evenings and weekends

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • (BLS) Basic Life Support within 30 days
