Overview

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics is home to the largest laboratory in New Hampshire, providing Pathology and Clinical Laboratory services to Dartmouth Health's physician practices, Dartmouth Health member hospitals, as well as to independent practices and hospitals throughout New Hampshire and Vermont.  The department is a leader in process improvement (LEAN/Six Sigma), which has resulted in a renovated space designed for workflow efficiency.  With a slogan of ‘Investigate, innovate and validate,’ our lab is:

Our Laboratory Assistants receive laboratory specimens from inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and outside institutions.  Candidates for this position need to have obtained their HS Diploma or GED, with some college coursework and previous laboratory experience preferred.  We are seeking candidates with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability and desire to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment.  Our laboratory team is a high-functioning, dedicated team of professionals who work hard to the highest possible standard.

 

This position works 50/50 between chemistry and hematology. In chemistry, the team conducts tests on blood and urine to diagnose diseases, monitor disease and health in the population, and track prescription and illicit drug usage. The lab assistant performs sample preparation, laboratory organization, data collection, sample storage, and various research projects/assay validations. In hematology, the team runs tests on blood, urine, body fluids, and bone marrow to diagnose cancers, monitor disease, and health in the population. The lab assistant in this section will support the team in instrument maintenance, sample storage, safety compliance, and other tasks. If you are someone who likes to work independently on a larger team this is the role for you – you’ll get to know chemistry and hematology really well and will be a part of a team that fosters education and growth.

 

This is a per diem position with flexible working hours Monday - Friday, 7:00 - 5:00 pm, as scheduled.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs quality and receiving functions related to checking patient demographic information, registration, ordering, adding, and canceling tests following all safety rules and regulations.
  2. Prints and scans orders into the Laboratory information system.
  3. Labels samples and delivers specimens to testing department, loads analyzers, centrifuges and performs specimen processing, restocks inventory, maintains the organized lab space.
  4. Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as needed.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate required.
  • Able to complete assignments with minimal direction and adapt to rapidly changing workflows.
  • 6 months of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment are required.
  • Strong computer skills
