Dartmouth-Hitchcock is home to the largest laboratory in NH, providing Pathology and Clinical Laboratory services to D-H physician practices, D-H hospital affiliates, as well as to independent practices and hospitals throughout NH and VT. The department is a leader in process improvement (LEAN/Six Sigma), which has resulted in a renovated space designed for workflow efficiency. Responsible for the overall direction, operations and performance of the Hematology and Flow Cytometry sections. Plans, organizes, and manages section activities and personnel.
1. Supervises laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures
2. Team Building
• Onboarding: Review applications, schedule screening, and onsite interviews. Arrange the itinerary and participate in a collaborative interview process. Collects and analyses feedback to determine the best candidate. Schedules and documents training milestones with regular check-ins.
• Monitor performance and encourage professional growth through goal setting and continuing education. Builds and assigns competencies for technical skill sets.
• Performs all human resource management responsibilities, such as conducting employee performance appraisal, promotions, transfers, interviews, hiring, conflict resolution, and termination of employees.
• Supports teaching program in the section, which includes students, residents, other shifts, aides, etc.
• Supports DH system definition of Just Culture
3. Stewardship - establishing annual budget, reviewing P&L and payroll variance reports, supporting periodic review of supplies to reduce cost.
• Meeting department goals- ensure productivity through training, coaching, and providing appropriate tools and equipment to perform tasks.
4. Commitment to Quality with Continuous Process Improvement - Review quality problems and troubleshooting events to identify root causes and establish preventative measures.
• Develop or sponsor process improvement projects to address and revise processes to maintain expected quality.
• Prepares technical reports reflecting Section process volume, testing results, analysis, adverse trends, conclusions, or recommendations for management.
• Develops and implements Section-specific processes/procedures/policies and quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment, and compliance with safety/health and state/federal regulations
• Foster an environment that supports College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards, such as oversight of proficiency testing and employee competency
6. Communication - Proactively conveys updates and changes to the team with clear and concise language. Regularly interacts with Medical Directors, Supervisors, Managers, and Pathologists to maintain open channels for feedback and collaboration on multi-departmental projects. Leads Section meetings.
7. Time Management and Organization - Manage daily tasks and responsibilities; scheduling, project action items, supply inventories, quality indicators, leads productive meetings, and meets project deadlines. Performs appraisals, competency reviews, and meets compliance requirements for Section and staff
8. Engages and actively participates in the strategic goals and initiatives of the department
9. Advanced Technology - Investigates technical advances in the section and introduces those most beneficial to the workflow
10. Section-specific duties and competency as defined by the hiring manager and regulatory requirements
11. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
