Supervises staff and work load in assigned, specialized shop/section of the department. Ensures all 24/7 operations across the powerplants for the hospital’s multiple locations including; boilers, turbine generators, turbo-motor compressors and all related auxiliaries. Responsible for the production of steam, power, electrical power, chilled water systems and refrigeration. Operates all high-pressure steam boilers with superheaters, economizers and auxiliary equipment.

1. Supervises shop/section personnel. Recommends employment, disciplinary action, and termination. Completes annual performance appraisals on all assigned personnel, and provides counseling and coaching. Schedules staff to provide adequate coverage.
2. Supervises and directs the work of assigned Boiler and Energy Plant Operators; performs training as required.
3. Evaluates the operations and maintenance practices on all power plant equipment including boilers, turbine generators, air compressors, chilled water systems, refrigeration equipment, pumps, motors and all other related equipment auxiliaries.
4. Plans modifications, rebuilds, and/or replacements to achieve more cost-effective operations and improve reliability. Develops a 5-year equipment replacement/upgrade schedule for planning/budgeting projections.
5. Observes power demand and consumption making required adjustments for power factor correction, frequency and voltage.
6. Instructs personnel in operation and repair of equipment or systems. Develops procedures for equipment and system operation and back-up plans. Maintains and instructs classes on equipment, equipment policies, emergency backup and/or redundancy plans for critical system failures for off hour, weekend, and holiday personnel.
7. Diagnoses and rectifies problems within physical plant such as loss of heat, loss of hot water, power outage, loud noises, hot bearing, units overheating, broken belts, jammed controls, etc.
8. Contributes technical engineering support to design group and construction management staff for projects. Reviews drawings and equipment specifications, reviews construction progress, schedules inspections, assists in the commissioning of equipment and systems upon completion, verifies as-build drawings and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals, and sets up preventative maintenance plans. Plans supply needs for proposed projects.
9. Provides section reports, shift logs, requisitions, work schedules, monthly reports, inspection reports, work order documentation, and labor reports. Completes detailed utility equipment/system failure reports. Operates all steam turbine generators, condensers, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries, synchronizing the generators when necessary, synchronizing electric cables with the generator when necessary. Logs observations. Performs minor electrical functions (changes fuses, bulbs, checks circuit breakers) etc.
10. Schedules personnel for preventive maintenance work, work orders, and problems. Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and repair of all power plant equipment and instrumentation.
11. Completes cost and time estimates, and/or obtains estimates from outside contractors, for proposed work or purchase and installation of new equipment. Recommends acceptance of bids. Coordinates, inspects, and approves work performed by outside contractors.
12. Possess some welding and machine shop experience.
13. Orders parts and supplies to maintain inventory. Conducts competitive price checks. Recommends equipment purchases. Assists the Director in planning budget.
14. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

• High School Diploma or GED with 4 years of experience in field of technical specialization required



• 2+ years of supervisor experience required



• Associates or equivalent education in engineering/engineering technology and 10+ years' experience as a hospital plant operator preferred. Applicable Education such as Energy Systems and Facilities Engineering (Stationary Engineering License) or applicable preferred.



• 1st & 2nd Class Fireman License and 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Class Engineer licenses preferred (not required).

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required in accordance with D-H’s Driver Disqualifications Guidelines.



• Obtain ASHE Health Care Physical Environment Worker Certification within 90 days of hire.
