The Dartmouth Hitchcock Undergraduate Summer Internship Programs are perfect for undergraduate students looking for hands-on experience and exposure in a healthcare clinical, business, or operational setting. Included in the summer experience is a comprehensive professional development curriculum that allows you to learn along with your cohort and experience different healthcare environments and knowledge first-hand.

If you are interested in applying, be sure to choose the internship track that is right for you. You will be able to select one or more of these tracks in our post-application questionnaire, which you will receive upon completing your initial application. Our tracks include:

  • Patient Care Internship for Students with an LNA License
    • For nursing students or other undergraduate pre-med/pre-health students with their LNA license. Work as a Licensed Nursing Assistant in one of our inpatient units or ambulatory clinics gaining valuable, hands-on patient care skills.

 

  • Long-term Care Geriatrics
    • Contribute to various geriatric care initiatives with an emphasis on dementia-friendly care.

 

  • Laboratory and Research
    • Examples of past laboratory and research sites include molecular, histology, hematology oncology, otolaryngology/ENT, population/community health.

 

  • Engineering and Technology
    • Examples of past sites include biomedical engineering, facilities and maintenance, simulation center, IT, analytics institute.

 

  • Hospital Operations & Patient Care
    • Work on day-to-day tasks in one or more operational areas of the facility. Examples of past sites include outpatient clinic operations, inpatient/outpatient rehab, perioperative services, emergency department, neurodiagnostics, patient transportation, pharmacy.

 

  • Healthcare Administration & Project Management
    • Examples of past sites include human resources, nursing administration, process improvement team, communications & marketing, general ambulatory services, population/community health, outpatient clinical administration.

 

Successful candidates for the College Summer Internship Program are:

  • Motivated by helping others – whether you are interested in direct patient care or the administrative and operational business of a hospital, we all share the mission of taking care of patients
  • Have an active New Hampshire LNA license by the start of the program. ( Patient Care Interns Only)
  • Have active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers from the American Heart Association. (Patient Care Interns Only)

Key Responsibilities for patient care Interns:  

  • Assists with routine patient care activities under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, including, but not limited to, performing ADLs, obtaining clinical data, including vital signs, heights, and weights, utilizing universal precautions, collecting specimens or performing point-of-care testing and recording results in the medical record, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe work environment by keeping the hallways clear of excess equipment, emptying linen bags when full, etc.
  • Assists visitors and answers telephones.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

This is a paid program that requires a 10 week full-time commitment (11 weeks for Patient Care Interns). We are looking for undergraduate students who are excited to apply academic study while exploring careers in the world of healthcare!

Specific internship department placement decisions are based on a combination of your area of interest, any required skills, and department host opportunities available each year. We work hard to create great matches so that our interns and department hosts have a wonderful experience. We encourage applicants to be open to learning new things and gaining experiences in new and exciting disciplines and environments they may have not considered before.

Applications for our unlicensed interns are due Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 11:59 PM.

Applications for Patient Care interns (LNA license) are due Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 11:59 PM.

  • One letter of recommendation from a professor, supervisor, coach, colleague, etc. (non-family member) from within the last year.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • At least 18 years old by the first day of the internship (June 2, 2025)
  • Must have completed one full year of undergraduate study
  • Availability to commit to the full program
  • You must arrange your own housing and transportation
  • Eligible for employment in the United States
  • Successfully complete the Dartmouth Health pre-employment screening process including criminal background check and drug screen
