Overview

Contributes to the development of the overall Dartmouth-Hitchcock safety strategy by designing and implementing employee safety programs aligned with the framework of the Dartmouth–Hitchcock organizational safety program to improve workplace safety. Manages risks and compliance in the environment of care through development of surveillance systems, policies, and proactive mitigation activities. Collaborates across the enterprise on opportunities to improve and align environment of care practices.

Responsibilities

  1. Takes a leadership role in proactively identifying, monitoring, and investigating safety issues. Works with counterparts at affiliate hospitals to ensure consistency of approaches to safety issues.
  2. Provides oversight of the radiation safety program and laser safety program
  3. Coordinates and collaborates with other services and departments that have responsibilities that affect safety. Works with the chief officer and other directors in the Value Institute to develop strategic plans to ensure that work is coordinated across the division.
  4. Designs and maintains communication mechanisms intended to keep staff and others informed about environmental safety risks, concerns, and solutions. Works with other departments to implement these mechanisms. In coordination with communications and marketing, works with news media to keep them informed concerning safety related issues.
  5. Develops and directs staff to provide orientation and ongoing departmental training programs pertaining to safety. Provides or monitors employee-training sessions. Monitors documentation of mandatory training. Verifies employee knowledge levels and effectiveness of training programs. Provides or coordinates "train the trainer" courses for managers. Coordinates and monitors for compliance with policies, regulations, and licensing requirements.
  6. Communicates regulatory changes and develops action plans for compliance. Maintains/monitors all documents required for compliance ready for immediate inspection by regulatory agencies. Responds to OSHA, JCAHO, and other inquiries.
  7. Works with all departments to plan, develop, integrate, utilize, monitor, and comply with operational policies and procedures.
  8. Prepares D-H for emergencies such as those relating from bio-terrorism.
  9. Works with DHMC Engineering and contractors to ensure adequacy of the safety programs and procedures. Monitors compliance with interim life safety requirements.
  10. Directs and oversees the work of assigned staff within the department. Provides mentorship for direct reports and conducts employee performance appraisals.
  11. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications




  • Bachelor's degree required, a degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science or similar. Master’s degree preferred


  • Five (5) years of experience in environmental, health and safety required. Healthcare experience preferred.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


  • Experience working with Microsoft office products.


  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) preferred
