At the direction of the supervisor and in conjunction with the Anatomic Pathology management team, performs duties to facilitate specimen verification, processing and triaging testing for the Anatomic Pathology – Cytology services to include, but are not limited to specimen processing, instrument routine maintenance and troubleshooting, fine needle aspirate procedure processing and support for patient procedures, documentation and hazardous materials management.

 

We are offering a $2500 sign-on/retention bonus for this position.  *The bonus is available for external hires only and certain conditions apply.

 

This is a full-time, 40-hour/week position working Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm and 9:00am-5:30pm, bi-weekly rotation.  This position does not require holidays.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs duties to facilitate specimen verification, processing and triage testing in accordance with procedures.
  2. Correctly identifies and labels processing materials.
  3. Ordering, preparing solutions and stocking gross bench with materials and supplies required for specimen preparation.
  4. Specimen preparation based on gross analysis, body site and collection technique, multi-task when necessary.
  5. Assists with fine needle aspiration (FNA) collection procedure and preparation as requested by clinician or cytotechnologist.
  6. Accession and process FNA specimens from procedures, non-gynecological and gynecological specimens.
  7. Interacts with patients and clinicians when necessary on fine needle aspiration or core biopsy procedures.
  8. Assist surgical techs and nursing staff with instructions for proper use of aspiration needle to expel sample for best result of specimen, triaging collection passes when necessary.
  9. Assist with collection technique instructions for ancillary testing.
  10. Correctly identifies specimens and maintains identification throughout processing.
  11. Troubleshoot specimens and orders, following through with other departments within the lab, cytology supervisor, clinician and pathologist when required.
  12. Prepares specimens for microscopic evaluation per established protocols and developed techniques.
  13. Follows up on abnormal cytology results per established protocol.
  14. Maintains specimen processors, stainers, and coverslippers; troubleshoots when necessary. Prepares stock solutions and specimen containers for procedures.
  15. Establishes daily schedule of fine needle aspiration procedures.
  16. Assists in management of incoming specimens, triaging when necessary.
  17. Ensures the proper identification of specimen and that all necessary paperwork is completed before processing is completed.
  18. Ensure that all specimens are accurately and appropriately labeled.
  19. Cleans/sterilizes instruments and performs maintenance quality assurance daily, weekly and monthly in a highly regulated department.
  20. Leaves area prepared for next case/specimen. Cleans and stocks areas at the end of each day. Removes hazardous bulk waste materials from laboratory each working day, following established departmental policies. Ensures that all material is properly labeled and in appropriate containers.
  21. Maintains inventory of flammable materials and formalin. Distributes materials to areas where FNA procedures are performed upon request.
  22. Maintains recycling activities for solvents. Ensures that all material is properly labeled and stored. Maintains appropriate logs and recycling equipment. Reports all problems to the cytology supervisor immediately.
  23. Disposes of specimens per departmental policy
  24. Accessions cases into LIS (Laboratory Information Systems) and troubleshoots specimens by contacting providers or hospital departments if necessary.
  25. Prepares specimens for send-out testing if ordered by pathologist.
  26. Organizes and files requisitions and reports in the department, prepares documents for storage in an off-site facility.
  27. Coordinates transfer of gynecological specimens for testing between other departments. Maintains filing and storage of specimens as well.
  28. Answering and triaging phone calls from providers, clinicians and office staff pertaining to patient specimens, collection techniques and patient records.
  29. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • 30 credit semester hours with 18 semester hours including medical laboratory technology courses or 18 semester hours that include biology, chemistry, science-based and/or mathematics in any combination are required.
  • Two (2) years of appropriate laboratory experience a plus
  • Telecytology/ telepathology experience a plus.
  • Knowledge base of human anatomy preferred.
  • Strong ability to multi-task with attention to fine details a must.
  • Willing to train the right candidate
